The most helpful watercolor warm up was the children's illustration as I taught me how to layer colors to shade and give the piece dimension. The most helpful perspective one was the letters as it forced me to think more about the perspective with the diagonal lines which was helpful for the castle as most of it was made of cylinders.

I found the children books illustration most helpful as I just had to figure it out on my own and I had think a little differently to mimic the original artist. The thing I like about watercolor is watching the colors flow so smoothly into each other. It gives the whole painting a soothing quality with the nice gradients. Related to the subtle colors I found getting vibrant colors hard to do. They just kept ending up as a pastel, which looked nice on some parts but it was not exactly what I had in mind.
The place that is represented in my piece is the ballet studio and the stage. I spend a lot of my time at the studio practicing/rehearsing and I enjoy performing. It allows me to express myself in a different way and get lost in the movement. I added the transition from the studio instead of just the stage because most of the work put in is never seen and the studio is where everything begins. The scene I painted was Kingdom of Shades from the ballet La Bayadère. The most challenging part of the piece was painting the dancers. I wanted to paint them more realistically however it didn't work out. They ended up without faces and hands. Overall I was unsatisfied with them . I also had difficulties with the off-whites. My painting required lots of white and it was hard to get the colors to be different yet still white. On the other hand the most successful part was the moon. I was really happy with how it turned out with the bits of pink and blue. I did like the background of the stage in general. Process
These activities gave me a better understanding of color and techniques for painting. I think the most helpful for my planned painting is the tint/tone/shade. I learned the most from painting a tree and I think I was successful as the tree I painted looked better then normal. You can make brown by mixing a color with its complimentary color, like blue and orange or red and green. To tone down a color you add grey or a little bit of its complimentary color.
Progress & VocabWarm up Thomas Medicus is an Austrian artist who builds sculptures from layers of painted glass. He plays with different view points and uses these illusions to create stunning works. Medicus went to school for glass art and was hired at a firm who made stained glass windows. He took his experience and made unique pieces. One of the things he made was the "Emulsifier". A total of 4 different images can be seen, 2 fish and 2 birds. I find the construction of this very interesting as it is something you would not typically think of. The combination of the many glass strips still give it a 3D effect and observing the work in person would incredible. The reason it inspires me is because of how unique the idea is as well as the work put behind it in order to execute the illusion. Many factors had to be considered to get the right effect and I respect that. I might have bit of a fascination with things made of glass so that could also be a reason for my inspiration.
